Dublin is fortunate to have numerous auto dealerships within the 43016 and 43017 zip codes; from The Toy Barn designed for the car enthusiast, Germain Lexus and MAG for the more luxurious rides, and Tansky Toyota for those seeking the legendary reliability of a Toyota. But let's face it, when it comes to insuring these vehicles, the process can be downright painful.
Insuring your vehicle shouldn’t be a confusing and painful process… in fact, when done correctly, you should feel a sense of relief knowing that you have the protection you need for your car, as well as your finances.
Why your finances?
Well did you know that according to the Census Bureau, there are more than 10 million traffic accidents in the United States every year?
And the costs are staggering:
And the legal expenses alone can cause devastating financial consequences. So for these reasons, it’s critically important that you not only have enough coverage to protect your vehicle, but also the RIGHT coverage to protect your finances in the event you seriously injure someone in an accident.
Curious about what can be used to pay for injuries or damages you cause, IF your insurance coverage isn’t enough? Here’s what the courts typically seize to satisfy a judgment:
But before we cover what type of insurance you should consider, let’s begin with what all drivers are required to purchase by law.
First and foremost, it’s important to understand that a driver’s license is not a right, it’s a privilege. And this privilege comes with several responsibilities, one of them being the fact that you’re required by law to purchase auto insurance when you own or lease a vehicle.
In the State of Ohio, all drivers are required to purchase a minimum amount of insurance to protect those they may injure in an accident. The current minimum amount of coverage required by Ohio law is:
If these limits seem a little too low, it’s because they are. The fact is, $25,000 won’t go very far to someone that’s seriously injured in an accident. But remember, these limits of coverage are the ‘required minimum’… not to be interpreted as the right amount of coverage for YOU.
While each auto policy has its own unique coverage options and benefits, depending on the insurance company you choose as well as the coverages you select, there are six primary auto coverages you need to consider:
This coverage pays the medical and other expenses of those people injured, or even killed, in accidents you cause.
As mentioned previously, the minimum amount of coverage required in Ohio is $25,000 but you really need to consider a higher limit of coverage to protect your assets, and your future paychecks.
A qualified, Licensed Advisor can help you determine the right amount of coverage to adequately protect you while never losing sight of your budget.
Covers the damage your car causes to property. Usually, it’s the other car (or cars) involved in the accident. But, it can also cover damage to other objects you hit such as buildings, fences, lampposts or guardrails.
Do you want your insurance to pay for damage to your vehicle when it’s damaged while you’re driving it? If so, you need Collision coverage.
This option also provides coverage for damage to your vehicle, but for losses that occur while you’re outside of your vehicle (such as theft, hail damage or vandalism).
Often referred to as ‘Med-Pay’, this coverage pays for medical expenses (even funeral expenses) for you as well as members of your family (and passengers in your vehicle) if involved in an accident – regardless of who was at fault.
This coverage is commonly abbreviated as UM (Uninsured Motorists) and UIM (Underinsured Motorists), and pays if you’re in an accident with a driver that’s uninsured, OR a driver that doesn’t have enough coverage to pay for all of your damages (think the state minimum coverage we covered earlier).
You really have three options:
Tip. If you decide to do your shopping online, make sure you know exactly what you need. Often, online providers entice you with the least expensive option which could leave you paying a huge amount after a claim.
Unfortunately, too often with online sites, their focus is to get you to purchase their product instead of adequately protecting you, your family, your finances, etc.
This is why it’s critically important to discuss your risks, and individual coverage needs with a qualified, Licensed Insurance Advisor.
And if you want someone that can cover the entire insurance market for you, not just a single insurance company, you need to work with an Independent Insurance Agent.
If you watch TV for more than five minutes, you can’t miss the barrage of commercials doing their best to convince you that car insurance is a commodity where the only distinguishing factor is the price.
Unfortunately, what these commercials don’t show is the devastation individuals and families face after a serious accident occurs, and they learn their insurance coverage wasn’t enough to protect them.
The fact is, car insurance is anything but a commodity.
It’s hugely complex, and at the most fundamental level, we believe you deserve the advice and guidance only a Licensed Insurance Advisor can provide when purchasing something so complex.
We believe that peace of mind is not a commodity.
We believe that auto insurance, and the protection and peace of mind it provides, is more important today than ever before.
We believe that the risks to our personal safety and our livelihoods are just as unpredictable as the rapidly changing world we live in.
In short, we believe insurance matters.
Which is precisely why H&H has been obsessively protecting and caring for its clients since 1920.
